Advanced standardization and certification for safe, efficient remote MR scanning: Ready for prime time
Associated with a national and, in some areas, international severe shortage of MRI technologists/radiographers, there has been a rapidly growing and notable increasing interest in remote MR scanning, where the operator of the MR scanner is in a physical location that is remote to the location of the MR scanner being operated and patient being studied. Remote MR operations have generated the potential for unique safety concerns for both the patient and healthcare practitioners. Multiple remoter MR vendors have attempted to address these concerns in their own unique methods. However, to date, no consensus standardization has yet been defined for legal liability and/or methods of patient and site safety oversight for the unique environment associated with MR imaging. This course explains some common issues one can expect to confront when initiating remote MR scanning services; introduces and defines formal legal definitions and constructs for liabilities and responsibilities ascribed to and undertaken by those participating in remote MR scanning activities; introduces a standardized safety oversight structure unique to remote MR scanning environments; and introduces the American Board of MR Safety efforts at standardizing certification of those who will participate and operate in the unique environments and safety considerations generated by remote MR scanning operations.
